A Teaching Strategy for Exceptional Children

The Thematic Photobook System: A Teaching Strategy for Exceptional Children

The Thematic Photobook System is a teaching strategy that uses an interpersonal approach to involve and encourage a child to participate in producing photobooks of specific themes to facilitate desired learning or behavioral objectives. A thematic photobook is a tool which integrates a number of educational or therapeutic photo activities focused on a certain theme to help a child to attempt increasingly challenging tasks. A finished photobook may be used as a further learning tool. It may also stimulate the creation of additional photobooks on other themes which facilitate further objectives. The article gives examples of educational and behavioral goals achieved by exceptional children who were involved in the system. It describes the components of the teaching strategy that characterize the system. Advantages of this holistic system over using single photo activities and potential applications are suggested

An Innovative Integration of Therapeutic Photo Activities

An Innovative Integration of Therapeutic Photo Activities

An integration of various discrete therapeutic photo activities referenced in the published literature is described. Discrete therapeutic photo activities, such as looking at pictures, posing for pictures, taking pictures, discussing pictures taken, are combined into a creative project for a population of participants. The completed project is a PhotoBook depicting the peoples ideas, feelings and visions related to a particular theme. The description gives details for one exemplary holiday theme, Thanksgiving, with comments on extending the procedures to other themes and populations. The project builds upon past applied research on therapeutic photo activities and extends that work into an innovative way of channeling those activities into a final, creative product that has value in and of itself.

Let me tell you about myself (Project)

I believe every person whose life depends on others would be benefited from doing that project. This project I made with a group of high functioning verbal intellectually disable adults. It was unbelievable how much I've learned about them. Usually mentally disable individuals are known to most people who care for them by something specific describing them-somebody is attached to specific words or theme or somebody likes certain food or activity or display certain type of behavior. A lot of things which is happening in their lives remains unknown. This project allowed me to learn so much about those people and for very short time. It came out that lives of most of them are pretty rich and filled with many different events and feelings them tr. Working on that project helped them to learn some new skills and also discovered some things about themselves. This project could be invaluable help in working with non-verbal kids as well, as for those who care about a child it can be a great source of information about child's abilities, skills a child possesses, child likes and dislikes and so on. It could be a life long project reflecting a child progress in life. The example on this project is just one of the many ways to do that project. It depends on many things-the creativity of the person who leads the project, the level of development a child/adult and many other different things, but it give an opportunity for many different variations and you'd be surprised by many unexpected things a child or an adult you work with would invest in that project. Hope you'd enjoy it as I did.
